press forming

Press forming is also called press braking, which is one of the oldest mechanical steel plate or pipe deformation process. Press forming is a basically cold bending process used to shape, flange or make shallow impressions in a part previously blanked or sheared from steel sheet. While press forming differs from cold bending due to more complex shapes and multi-axis forming on the various steel plates.

Press Forming Processing

Though the press forming is a simple concept, the accuracy is often difficult to control. Precision bending is a function of the press, tooling and the work-piece material. Steel plate properties like yield strength, ductility, hardness and other conditions all have direct effects on the amount of spring back of the steel plates.

The most common industrial press forming process is named air bending. Air bending is based on three point bending. The angle of bending is dictated by how far the punch tip penetrates the “V” cavity. The greater the penetration of the punch is, the greater the angle is. The key benefit of air bending is that it uses much less force than other ways to achieve 90% bend owing to the leverage effect.

Precise Adjustmen of Press Forming Braking

Features of steel sheets braking forming process include:

Ability to form ductile materials;
Application in both low and medium production run;
Need for minimal tooling;
Suitability to produce smaller parts;
Output of long work-pieces adopting a ”V”, “U”, channel or other special punch and dies.

Press braking can form metals up to 10’’ thick and some machinery will form piece as long as 20 feet. Moreover, press braking forming process can form a variety of shapes. Some of most common shapes appear two-dimensionally in the following table.

The materials of cold rolled carbon steel, hot rolled carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum are widely used in the press brake forming process. Tool materials contain low carbon steel, tool steel and carbide for brake forming. Low carbon steel is used for small scale production, die and punch base materials and soft to medium hardness materials. While tool steel is used for medium to  large scale production, medium to server bending and medium to strong materials. Carbide tools are usually designed as tool inserts.
